Dr. Frene Ginwala
Dr. Ginwala is the Founding Chancellor of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, where she is currently serving a four-year term. Dr. Ginwala was a member of Parliament in South Africa who served as Speaker of the National Assembly from 1994 to 2004. She is a lawyer who received her LLB degree from the University of London, and her DPhil in History from Oxford University. Dr. Ginwala has sought to reduce gender disparity in conflict resolution and peace building efforts and has worked to include women on these issues in Burundi, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Liberia, Rwanda, Palestine, and Israel. She is a former member of the United Nations Secretary-General's Advisory Panel of High-Level Personalities on African Development and recently served as Commissioner of the International Commission on Human Security. Dr. Ginwala continues her work in promoting democracy, good governance, development and human rights, and human security.
